This term pertains to the ability of growing tumor cells, which are not usually angiogenic at first, to assume a phenotype promoting angiogenesis. This switch is important for tumor angiogenesis as it allows tumor cells to furnish themselves with blood vessels by exploiting blood vessel formation mechanisms of the host (capillary ingrowth through endothelial sprouting). The switch is brought about by complex changes in the net balance of positive and negative regulators of angiogenesis and their respective receptors, which affect the growth of progenitor endothelial cells and other supporting cells involved in the formation of new blood vessels
