abbr. ALK (a term with multiple meanings). This is the same as ALK1 [anaplastic lymphoma kinase 1]. The gene encoding this protein tyrosine kinase gene has been identified in a search for genes involved in chromosomal translocations identified in anaplastic large cell lymphomas (Morris et al, 1994). In these lymphomas it is expressed as an activated oncogen created by the fusion of the nucleophosmin gene to the tyrosine kinase moiety of ALK. The full length protein is not expressed in cell lines of the hematopoietic system. The protein has been given the designation CD246. The receptor tyrosine kinase
