[amphophilic cell]
This histological term pertains to the staining behaviour of certain cells that stain equally well with acidic dyes (existing as negatively charged anions) such as eosin, acid fuchsin and picric acid (used in Van Gieson's trichrome stain), or with basic dyes (existing as positively charged cations) such as hematoxylin, methylene blue derivatives, toluidine blue. These cells are being referred to also as amphocytes, amphochromatophils, amphochromophils, amphophil cells, amphophils. See also: chromophobe cells.
