abbr. APA [L-alpha-aspartyl(L-alpha-glutamyl)-peptide hydrolase, EC3.4.11.7]. abbr. also EAP. An old designation is Angiotensinase A (Kugler, 1982). The APA gene is highly conserved (Li et al, 1993). The enzyme catalyzes the removal of N-terminal Glu and Asp residues from proteins. For example, it converts angiotensin-2 to angiotensin-3, a degradation step important in local regulation of blood pressure in mammals (Kugler, 1982; Reaux et al, 2001).
Functional analysis suggests that aminopeptidase A is the same as the cell surface antigen BP-1. In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD249.
