This mouse mutation induced by N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) results in the amino acid substitution of histidine for tyrosine at position 344 (Y344H) of the Gsdma3 [gasdermin A3]. Mice with this mutation exhibit progressive hair loss, from head to the whole back, followed by hair regrowth. Hair structures are abnormal and hair keratin expression is reduced, causing defects in anchoring the hair shaft in the hair follicle, which also involves Msx2 / Foxn1 / acidic hair keratin genetic pathways.
