This insect hormone, identified originally as a factor that stimulates lipid mobilization for locomotor activity in locusts (Stone et al, 1976; Mayer and Candy, 1969), is a circulating peptide considered the functional ortholog of mammalian glucagon. Adipokinetic hormone is responsible for stimulating the release of diglyceride from the fat body, allowing insects to use lipids as an energy source during flight, and permitting them to fly long distances without feeding.
