This cell type in the zebrafish embryo constitutes a subset of mesodermal cells that delineates the prospective path of pioneering motor growth cones. Adaxial cells form a one-cell-diameter-thick pseudo-epithelium immediately adjacent to the notochord and are the progenitors of muscle pioneer cells.
Genetic ablation of adaxial cells causes profound pathfinding defects. Adaxial cells are migratory, and as growth cones approach they migrate away from the prospective axonal path to the lateral surface of the myotome, where they develop into slow-twitching muscle fibers. Hedgehog signals from notochord specify adaxial cells to form slow muscle cells
