This term pertains to conserved stretches of 44-60 amino acids that typically contain a GH (Gly-His) dipeptide 11-24 residues from the N-terminus and a WD (Trp-Asp) dipeptide at the C-terminus. Between 4-16 copies of WD repeats are found in so-called WD repeat proteins, which exist in all eukaryotes. Often, the exact function of WD repeats in these proteins is not clear, but they play a role in protein folding and may coordinate interactions of WD repeat proteins with other proteins and/or small ligands. Proteins containing WD repeats have been reported to regulate many different cellular functions, including cell division, cell fate determination, gene transcription, transmembrane signalling, mRNA modification, and vesicle fusion (for overview see: Smith TF et al, 1999; Li D and Roberts R, 2001).
