Varicella zoster virus ORF61

ORF61, encoded by an open reading frame in the genome of Varicella zoster virus is an immediate early gene expressed during infection with Varicella zoster virus. The protein down-regulates the stimulation of viral putative immediate-early, early, and late promoters by other viral trans-activator genes (Nagpal S and Ostrove, 1991). ORF61 can trans-activate or trans-repress the transcription of other viral proteins, including its own promoter, to enhance infectivity (Moriuchi et al, 1993, 1994; Wang et al, 2009; Perera et al, 1992). Zhu et al (2011) have reported that overexpression of ORF61 has only a minor effect on Sendai virus-induced NF-kappa-B signalling. ORF61 interacts with phosphorylated IRF3 and induces degradation of the protein, thereby preventing IFN-beta expression. The ORF61 protein contains an N-terminal RING domain ... ... ... ...
