abbr. often VICs; interstitial cells of the heart valves. This is a collective term for a heterogeneous population of cells found in the interstitial spaces of the normal aortic valve (see also: interstitial cells) (Taylor et al, 2000, Liu et al, 2007; Taylor et al, 2003; Latif et al, 2006; Blevins et al, 2006).
By their ultrastructural features and functional properties, valvular interstitial cells are intermediate between fibroblasts and vascular smooth muscle cells. Like fibroblasts, valvular interstitial cells lack a basal lamina establishing direct and extensive contacts with collagen fibers, elastin microfibrils, and proteoglycans of the matrix. The
