The vaccinia virus VH1 gene product is a dual specificity protein phosphatase with activity against both phosphoserine- and phosphotyrosine-containing substrates (Hakes et al, 1993). A highly conserved gene is found also in the genomes of smallpox variola virus and other orthopoxviruses. VH1 is related most closely to the tyrosine/serine dual-specificity phosphatase 3CH134 (see also: erp). HVH1 is the human VH1 phosphatase homolog (Charles et al, 1993).
Liu et al (1995) have reported that VH1 is essential for viral transcription. Najarro et al (2001) have reported that VH1 blocks IFN-gamma signal transduction (JAK-STAT pathway) by dephosphorylating STAT1
