[Vaccinia virus E3L protein] This protein is encoded in the genome of Vaccinia virus. It is an intracellular protein that is highly conserved among orthopoxviruses. The protein is a dsRNA binding protein that is expressed early during infection and localizes to both the cytoplasm and nucleus (Watson et al, 1991; Yuwen et al, 1993).
Vaccinia virus E3 protein is a multifunctional protein that acts through different pathways as a virulence factor and immune evasion protein to counteract antiviral responses of host cells.
The viral protein has been shown to influence the host range phenotype of Vaccinia virus (Langland and Jacobs, 2002). The viral protein is required for replication in HeLa cells, Vero cells, and murine L929 cells
