often also simply Vaccinia virus A52 protein or A52 protein or A52R protein; also Poxvirus A52R protein. This protein is encoded in the genome of Vaccinia virus. The protein has no obvious similarity to host proteins. It is a member of the Vaccinia virus BCL2 family and adopts a BCL2-like fold but has evolved to inhibit NF-kappa-B rather than apoptosis (Graham et al, 2008). Postigo and Way (2012) have reported that Vaccinia virus A52R protein does not associate with the pro-apoptotic BAX or inhibit drug-induced cell death. Deletion of the A52R gene from Vaccinia virus reduced virus virulence (Harte et al, 2003).
