Vaccinia growth factor
VGF has a length of 77 amino acids. It is a kDa glycoprotein with a high content of mannose residues. The protein is encoded by the VV (C11R) gene of Vaccinia virus [Vaccinia virus C11R protein] and is expressed and secreted in virus-infected cells early during the infectious cycle as a 19 kDa protein.
The gene is localized in the ITR region (inverted terminal repetition) of the viral genome and hence occurs in two copies. In newer publications the protein is being referred to as vEGF [viral EGF].
The factor is identical with VVGF [vaccinia virus growth factor]. It also binds to the receptor for EGF and functions as an EGF receptor
