[very late activation antigen-beta; also: VLA-beta-1] Very late activation antigens are a family of heterodimeric transmembrane proteins that belong to the integrin family of cell adhesion molecules (Hynes, 1987; Ruoslahti, 1991). These antigens consist of a distinct alpha subunit non-covalently linked to a common beta subunit. Their name refers to the observation that beta-chains increase in amount and additional alpha-subunits appear after long-term T-cell activation (Hemler et al, 1987).
In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD29.
