[VLA integrin]
called also: Beta-1 integrins; a collective term for a group of six antigens mediating the adhesion of cells to proteins of the extracellular matrix. The common feature of VLA integrins is that they all share CD29 (integrin-beta-1) as a common subunit.
The term refers to VLA (very late antigen), which, in turn, pertains to early observations showing that these receptors are expressed during very late stages of cell activation of T-cells. The term is still being used even though many cell types constitutively express one or more of these integrins.
The 6 alpha subunits associating with integrin-beta-1 in VLA integrins are
integrin-alpha-1 (
