This recombinant fusion protein is a composite decoy receptor based on VEGF receptors VEGFR1 and VEGFR2, fused to an Fc segment of IgG1 (Holash et al, 2002). The high affinity fusion proteins can be used to block the biological activities of VEGF by preventing VEGF to bind to its receptors. It blocks angiogenesis by targeting not only all forms of VEGF-A, but also VEGF-B and placental growth factor.
VEGF-Trap effectively suppresses tumor growth and vascularization in vivo, resulting in stunted and almost completely avascular tumors (Holash et al, 2002). VEGF-Trap has been reported to effect regression of coopted vessels in a model of neuroblastoma
