[Vascular endothelial growth factor-121b] Another designation is VEGF-A121b [Vascular endothelial growth factor A121b]. The terms VEGF(xxx)b and VEGF(xxx) refer to splice isoforms of VEGF (VEGF-A). VEGF-121b is an isoform of VEGF-121 (itself an isoform of VEGF) that lacks sequences from exon 8a (see: VEGF-A for explanation and nomenclature). Unlike VEGF-121, which promotes angiogenesis, VEGF-121b is considered to be an anti-angiogenic splice isoform (Qiu et al, 2009).
