The V-1 protein has been identified by Taoka et al (1992, 1994). The protein is expressed in cerebellar granule cells and Purkinje cells. Purkinje cells express the protein constitutively, whereas its expression in cerebellar granule cells becomes suppressed after postnatal cerebellar development. Cerebellar granule cells of the staggerer mouse mutant continue to express the protein.
Rat, murine and chicken V-1 are identical with Myotrophin (Anderson et al, 1999).
