[ubiquitin interacting motif domain] This domain is found in a variety of eukaryotic proteins. Proteins containing this domain are involved in processes involving ubiquitin and the degradation of proteins. Oldham et al (2002) have reported that this domain may function as a general signal for ubiquitination. Ubiquitin, apart from its role in targeting proteins for proteasomal degradation, is also involved in promoting internalization of cell surface proteins into the endocytic pathway and it has been suggested that the UIM domain is involved also in binding these proteins to biological membranes (Aguilar et al, 2003).
