[ubiquitin-associated domain] This sequence motif of approximately 45 amino acids is evolutionarily conserved from yeast to humans (Hofmann and Buchner, 1996). It is present in multiple enzyme classes of the ubiquitination pathway that targets proteins to the proteasome for subsequent degradation by the attachment of ubiquitin. This domain is a commonly occurring sequence motif also in UV excision repair proteins and certain protein kinases. The UBA domain also occurs in several proteins containing domains similar to ubiquitin itself (Buchberger et al, 2002).
