[Tudor domains]
also: Tud domain. This protein domain is a small (50-55 amino acids) module found originally in the Drosophila melanogaster Tud (Tudor) gene (gene CG9450), which is required for assembly of the germ plasm. Tud mutant female flies develop into sterile adults (the name alludes to the royal Tudor dynasty, which did not leave an heir after the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603) (Boswell and Mahowald, 1985; Thomson and Lasko, 2005). There are similar proteins to TUD in the germline of other metazoan species including mice.
