abbr. TC1. This antibacterial protein was purified from platelet granules. Thrombocidin-1 is a variant of the CXC-Chemokine NAP-2 (CXCL7) and differs from NAP-2 by the C-terminal truncation of two amino acids (Krijgsveld et al, 2000). Thrombocidin-1, but not the parent protein, is bactericidal for Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Lactococcus lactis and fungicidal for Cryptococcus neoformans. See also: Kinocidins. Thrombocidin-1 has been used as a design template for antimicrobial peptides with improved antimicrobial activity (for examples see; Kwakman et al, 2011; Riool et al, 2020).
