Theta-Defensins

[theta-Defensin]

Theta-Defensins constitute one class of defensins, which are differentiated by the spacing and pairing of their six disulfide-bonded cysteines. In contrast to Alpha-Defensins and Beta-Defensins, Theta-Defensins are distinguished further by a macrocyclic backbone, which makes them the only known cyclic protein motif expressed in animals. Theta-Defensins are obtained head-to-tail splicing of two stretches of 9 amino acids derived from Theta-Defensin precursors (Selsted (2004).

Theta-Defensins have been identified in neutrophils and monocytes of rhesus monkeys (Tang et al, 1999), and in other Old World monkeys and two apes (the siamang and orangutan), but not in New World monkeys ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
