This subtype of regulatory T-cells is generated following CD4(+) CD25(-) naive T-cell activation in the presence of TGF-beta with or without retinoic acid and IL2. The cells express transcription factor Foxp3 and primarily secrete TGF-beta, and show potent suppressive activities both in vitro and in vivo (Chen et al, 2003).
