(approved gene symbol) [telomeric-repeat binding factor 1]; abbr. often TRF1. TERF1 is part of the shelterin complex, which binds telomeres and it is essential for their protection. The protein has been shown to be a major telomeric protein involved in the regulation of telomere length and to regulate telomere length in telomerase-positive cells (van Steensel and de Lange, 1997; Chong et al, 1995).
