TCEN49 is a small secreted glycoprotein of approximately 5 kDa found in freshwater planarians. The protein sequence does not show any similarity with other known proteins (Vispo et al, 1996).
TCEN49 is linked to the regional maintenance of the planarian central body region. TCEN49 behaves as a trophic factor involved in central body region neuron survival and has been described as a molluscan neurotrophin. In vivo inhibition of TCEN49 expression causes extensive cell death by apoptosis in various cell types, including nerve cells (Bueno et al, 2002).
