[T-cell replacing factor]
abbr. TRF (a term with multiple meanings) (for nomenclature see also: Mizel and Farrar, 1979). A normal immune response requires the co-ordinated interaction and also the specific contact between T-cells and B-cells. Some of the helper functions of T-cells are due to the continuous production and secretion of specific growth factors (see also: T-helper cells). The term TRF was coined at the beginning of research on cytokines to describe soluble factors found in the conditioned medium of stimulated cells that render the synthesis of antibodies by B-cells independent of the simultaneous presence of T-cells
