abbr. SCIF (a term with multiple meanings). This biochemically uncharacterized factor is secreted by blood monocytes from patients with active pulmonary tuberculous. It induces suppressor cells that depress blastogenesis in lymphocytes (Fujiwara et al, 1991; Nishimura, 1990).
A factor with a similar activity has been observed also to be secreted into the conditioned medium of tumor cells of a patient with a squamous cell carcinoma of the maxilla transplanted into nude mice (see also: Immunodeficient mice). The patient manifested marked leukocytosis and this was observed also in transplanted mice
