[Efb homologous protein] ehp is a secreted protein of Staphylococcus aureus identified by Hammel et al (2007). The protein is a virulence factor and plays a role in immune response evasion.
The mature Ehp polypeptide is composed of 80 residues and is 44 % identical to the complement inhibitory domain of Efb [Extracellular fibrinogen-binding protein]. Ehp binds preferentially to native and hydrolyzed C3 relative to fully active C3b. Ehp potently inhibites C3b deposition onto sensitized surfaces by the alternative complement activation pathway.
