Staphylococcus aureus delta-toxin

Delta-toxin, which is known also as Delta-hemolysin, is one of the exotoxins produced by many isolates of Staphylococcus aureus. Delta-toxin is a protein of 26 amino acids (MAQDIISTIGDLVKWIIDTVNKFTKK) that contains 14 hydrophobic residues and a high percentage of nonionizable side chain amino acids (Fitton et al, 1980). The protein isvery similar to PSM-gamma [Phenol soluble modulin gamma] (see: Modulins).

Delta-toxin is a surface-active protein and can readily insert itself into hydrophobic membrane structures and forms ion channels (Colacicco et al, 1977; Melor et al, 1988). Delta-Hemolysin forms a 1:1 complex with calcium ion-liganded calmodulin (Garone et al, 1988).
