these factors are produced by Staphylococcus aureus and play a role as virulence factors and immune responsion evasion factors. Two clumping factors, designated ClfA [clumping factor A] and ClfB [clumping factor B] have been identified (McDevitt D et al, 1994, 1995; Nő́ Eidhin D et al, 1998). In contrast to ClfA, which is present on cells at all stages of the growth cycle, ClfB is present only at a detectable and functional level on the surface of cells of strain Newman in the exponential phase of growth (Nő́ Eidhin D et al, 1998).
Both factors are related surface-associated proteins that bind fibrinogen. ClfA
