[extracellular matrix protein-binding protein] This 40 kDa secreted protein of Staphylococcus has been identified by Hussain et al (2001). The protein is a virulence factor and plays a role in immune response evasion.
Emp shows broad-spectrum recognition of fibronectin, fibrinogen, collagen, and vitronectin and thus acts as an adhesin. Johnson et al (2008) have shown that Emp is one of the proteins required for iron-regulated biofilm formation under low-iron growth conditions.
