[Extracellular fibrinogen-binding protein] The gene encoding this protein of Staphylococcus aureus has been cloned by Bodén MK and Flock JI (1994), who referred to it as fib. Efb is a 19 kDa (136 amino acids) secreted binding protein for fibrinogen. Efb binds to the alpha-chain of fibrinogen and does not participate in bacterial adherence to fibrinogen (Palma et al, 1998). For a related protein see: Staphylococcus aureus ehp.
