This peptide has been isolated from Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera). Its structure is similar to that of defensins and scorpion toxins. The protein is characterized by imperfectly conserved tandem repeats of 11 cysteine-stabilized alpha beta motifs, the structural scaffold characteristic of invertebrate defensins and scorpion toxins. Spod-11-tox orthologs are found only in Lepidopteran species (Girard et al, 2008).
Recombinant Spod-11-tox does not show any antimicrobial activity. Spod-11-tox is an immune-related protein induced rapidly by infection and is expressed mainly in blood cells but its function is unknown.
