[Scots pine antimicrobial peptides] Sp-AMP constitutes a family of antimicrobial peptides isolated from Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine) (Asiegbu et al, 2003). Sp-AMP-1 cDNA has been identified in a substructured cDNA library of root tissue infected with the root rot fungus Heterobasidion annosum, a major pathogen of woody trees in temperate regions of the world, and encodes a mature peptide of 79 amino acid residues. Sp-AMP-2, Sp-AMP-3, and Sp-AMP-4 encode cysteine-rich proteins of 105 amino acids, each containing an N-terminal region with a probable cleavage signal sequence. Sp-AMP expression is elevated in Scots pine roots upon infection with H. annosum. These
