Snake venoms contain a variety of metalloproteases that can be distinguished from each other by their domain structure. Type 1 proteases contain a metalloprotease domain only. Type 2 proteases contain an additional disintegrin domain, and type 3 proteases contain yet another domain. The metalloprotease domain is capable of digesting collagen type 4 whereas the disintegrin domain by virtue of the presence of an Arg-Gly-Asp sequence motif can inhibit integrin mediated cell-to-cell and cell-matrix interactions.
