abbr. SSCs. This cell type has been observed in the larval epidermis of Xenopus tropicalis. The cells contain an abundance of large apical secretory vesicles. Small Secretory Cells are specified by transcription factor Foxa1, secrete a dense, heavily glycosylated material positive for binding of the lectin, peanut agglutinin, and an antibody to the carbohydrate epitope, HNK-1. Cell depletion experiments show that the cells are responsible for the innate defence mechanisms of the embryo against pathogen invasion (Dubaissi et al, 2014).
Cells of similar ultrastructural morphology but unknown function have been described by Hayes et al (2007).
