abbr. SKPs. Skin-derived precursors are postnatal multipotent somatic stem cells with properties of neural crest cells that reside in the dermis of skin, from which they can be isolated easily. They were isolated originally by Toma et al (2001) from rodent skin and subsequently from human skin (Toma et al, 2005). Skin-derived precursors are antigenically-distinct from mesenchymal stem cells and in culture grow as spheroids, whereas mesenchymal stem cells grow as adherent cell layers (Toma et al, 2001). This cell type is thought to represent endogenous neural crest-related precursor cells
