This toxin is produced by various Shigella isolates and various other bacterial species (see: CDT) (Okuda et al, 1995). The toxin is cytolethal to mammalian cells and causes progressive cell distention and cytotoxicity, and ultimately causes cell death by apoptosis. Because the factor can interfere with the cell cycle it can be grouped among the cyclomodulins. It is thought that this protein is a virulence factor in pathogens that produce the toxin (for overview see also: Smith and Bayles, 2006).
