[Spodoptera frugiperda caspase-1] This enzyme is a member of a family of evolutionarily conserved cysteine protease proteins known as caspases. Many of these enzymes are part of a proteolytic cascade that plays a central role in cell death by apoptosis. Sf-caspase-1 is a caspase found in Spodoptera frugiperda, the natural host of baculoviruses.
Sf-caspase-1 is highly related to human MCH3 and CPP32 in sequence and specific activity. Sf-caspase-1 is produced as a proenzyme (zymogen) of 299 amino acids that can is processed autocatalytically to an active enzyme heterocomplex consisting of a large p19/p18 and a small p12 subunit (Ahmad et al, 1997).
