Senescent cell antigen is a ubiquitous (Kay, 1981) aging neoantigen that appears on old cells and appears to act as a specific signal for the death of old or damaged cells by initiating the binding of IgG autoantibody and subsequent removal by phagocytes by macrophages (Kay, 2013). Mandal et al (2003) have reported similarities in the molecular events leading to erythrocyte cell death (see also: eryptosis) and cell death by apoptosis. They have shown that activation of caspase-3 is associated with cleavage of band 3 protein, which generates senescent cell antigen in erythrocytes
