E1 is a membrane-bound glycoprotein encoded by Semliki Forest virus responsible for host cell fusion. E1 forms fusogenic homotrimers that merge the virion and endosomal membranes (Kielan and Helenius, 1985; Wahlberg et al, 1992; Gibbons et al, 2004). have reported that the protein acts as a channel-forming viroporin that permeabilizes cells as efficiently as Semliki Forest virus 6K protein (see: Alphavirus 6K protein) and therefore may be involved also in breaching cell membrane barriers during infection.
