a conserved protein domain of approximately 500 amino acids found in the extracellular region of all members of the semaphorin protein family, which are involved in neuronal axon guidance. (Kolodkin et al, 1993).
Using the structurally similar chick collapsin-1, collapsin-2 and collapsin-3, Koppel et al have shown that the semaphorin domain of collapsin-1 is both necessary and sufficient for biological activity. The semaphorin domain contains a 70 amino acid region that specifies the biological activity of the three family members.
