Semaphorin Z is a member of the semaphorin gene family. Individual members of this family contribute to axon guidance by their repellent actions. The rat gene has been identified in mouse brain by Kikuchi et al (1997). Semaphorin Z mRNA is detected in the first branchial arch of embryonic day 11 rat embryo, and subsequently in the myotomes and the dorsal root ganglia in developing somites, but not in the brain. At later times semaphorin Z is highly expressed in the brain.
This protein has been renamed SEMA6B (Semaphorin 6B) (Semaphorin Nomenclature Committee, 1999). See: Semaphorins for overview entry.
