[Sea-blue histiocyte]
These cells, described originally by Moeschlin (1947), are macrophages that are stained sea blue with May-Giemsa stain (Silverstein, 1970; Silverstein et al, 1970; Silverstein and Ellefson, 1972). Such cells are found in a variety of lipid metabolic diseases, including Niemann-Pick disease (see: Niemann-Pick cells), Fabry's disease, and ceroid storage diseases.
