Se18.9 has been identified by Tiwari et al (2007) as a binding protein for complement factor H. The protein is secreted by Streptococcus equi, but not by the closely related but much less virulent Streptococcus zooepidemicus, and is found also on the bacterial surface. The protein reduces deposition of C3 on the bacterial surface and significantly reduces the bactericidal activity of equine neutrophils.
