Schwalbe line's cells

This cell type has been observed in the eye of Macaca mulatta (Raviola G et al, 1982). They are located at the anterior end of the trabecular meshwork, just beneath the ridge known as Schwalbe line in gonioscopy. Schwalbe line's cells form a discontinuous cord, oriented circumferentially at the corneal periphery, deep to the endothelial lining of the anterior chamber. Schwalbe line's cells are joined to one another by gap junctions and puncta adhaerentia.

The cells are characterized by a prominent Golgi apparatus and by two types of secretory granules. Their cytoplasmic inclusions bear a striking morphological resemblance to multilamellar bodies of type 2 alveolar epithelial cells of the lung. It has been suggested that Schwalbe line's cells may produce a phospholipid material that is released into the aqueous humor to facilitate its movement through the tissues of the sclerocorneal angle. ... ... ... ...
