Scara5 has been identified by Jiang et al (2006). Scara5 is a homotrimer and is expressed at the plasma membrane. Scara5 has the ability to bind Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, but does not bind zymosan and is unable to endocytose acetylated or oxidized low density lipoprotein. Scara5 may therefore also function as a pattern recognition receptor with a role in innate immunity
