abbr. SGF (a term with multiple meanings). This factor is secreted by mouse cells transformed by Moloney sarcoma virus. Expression of this factor in normal cells leads to a transformed phenotype which is reversible when the factor is removed. The biological activity of this factor can be abolished by antibodies directed against the receptor for EGF. SGF is a mixture of the transforming growth factors (see: TGF) TGF-alpha and TGF-beta which also bind to the EGF receptor.
When it was found that SGF-like activities were present also in extracts of tumor cells other than sarcomas the name was changed into "
